M-A girls string together 24-0 run in hoops win over Carlmont

Menlo, M-A boys remain unbeaten in WBAL, PAL respectively

The Menlo-Atherton girls basketball team opened the second half of its Peninsula Athletic League South Division game with visiting Carlmont with a rather dramatic 24-0 run, which included an 18-0 third quarter, en route to a 50-23 victory Friday night.

There was no one player who led the charge as nine different Bears scored, with Nell Fahey netting five of her 10 points in the third quarter. Overall, Nicolette Yeh led all M-A scorers with 11 points.

Alyssa Faberowski added nine points and Malia Latu had seven for the Bears (12-8, 7-1), who remained in a first place tie with Aragon. Carlmont (14-6, 4-4) fell out of a tie for third place.

Carlmont scored late in the second quarter to draw within 19-15. Catharine Chai hit a short jumper to give M-A a 21-15 lead at halftime. Latu started the run with a jumper early in the third quarter.

Carlmont called a timeout midway through the third period, after the Bears scored the first six points.

Latu hit a mid-range jumper out of the timeout and Yeh nailed a 3-pointer to restart the streak that didn’t want to end. Carlmont called another timeout with less than a minute to play in the third by which time M-A built a 36-15 advantage.

Fahey hit a 3-pointer from the corner to wrap things up in the third quarter. She also opened the fourth with another basket, followed by a Faberowski score. Mariah Dunlap made it 45-15 with about six minutes left to play before Carlmont finally hit a 3-pointer to break the spell.

M-A hosts Hillsdale at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Woodside, which lost to host Sequoia 42-34, hosts co-leader Aragon, also at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

In the West Bay Athletic League, Kennedy Anderson scored 13 points to help Sacred Heart Prep beat host Notre Dame Belmont 56-19 and keep pace with Pinewood at the top of the standings.

The Gators (13-5, 5-1) took a 25-2 lead after the first quarter and led 36-3 at halftime. Jamee Krzanich and Megan Norris each added seven points.

Priory (12-7, 3-3) beat visiting Eastside Prep 56-11 in another WBAL contest. Priory hosts Stevenson in a non-league game at 11 a.m. Saturday. SHP hosts Eastside (7-13, 0-6) at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

In the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division, host Gunn lost to division leader Homestead 61-29. Senior Joyce Lian scored 14 points for the Titans, who travel to play Milpitas at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Sophomore Mollie Kuelker added nine points.

Boys basketball

Menlo School needed a couple of big defensive stops to nudge past Priory 50-48 to maintain its hold on first place in the West Bay Athletic League.

Sacred Heart Prep remained a game behind the Knights, beating visiting Harker 78-41. Priory fell two games back of SHP.

Eastside Prep beat Crystal Springs Uplands 45-39 and Pinewood lost to The King’s Academy 64-52 in other league matches.

Justin Sellers and Cole Kastner each scored 13 points to lead Menlo (16-3, 9-0), which travels to play Pinewood at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Davis Mead gave the Knights 11 points and Garrett Keyhani had 10.

David Ajanaku-Makun scored 15 points and Zach Zafran added 13 for Priory (13-6, 6-3), which hosts Eastside Prep at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Sacred Heart Prep (15-3, 8-1) spread its scoring among 12 players with Jai Deshpande netting 17 points and James Pleasants scoring 13.

Deshpande reached double figures in scoring for the sixth straight contest and 15 of 18 overall. Pleasants reached double figures for the first time in nine games and the fourth time overall. He finished play Friday with 100 points for the season.

Sacred Heart Prep takes on visiting The King’s Academy at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Menlo-Atherton continues to rule the Peninsula Athletic League South Division. The Bears earned their 13th straight victory Friday with a 58-41 win over visiting Carlmont.

Nick Tripaldi scored 10 points to lead M-A (17-3, 8-0), which hosts Hillsdale at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Hillsdale (15-5, 7-1) is tied for second with Sequoia (11-9, 7-1), a game behind the Bears.

Trevor Wargo and Spencer Lin each added nine points for M-A as 12 players reached the scoring column.

Woodside lost to Sequoia 66-52 on Friday despite 11 points each from Dylan Barnwell and Isaiah Minor.

Sophomore Varun Madabhushi scored 10 points for Gunn in Friday’s 62-47 loss to visiting Wilcox in a SCVAL El Camino Division contest. Junior Gavin Kitch added nine points for the Titans (7-13, 3-5), who visit Lynbrook for a 7 p.m. contest Wednesday.
